Sectors We Serve:Intermodal
Transportation emissions sources in the United States account for nearly a third of the nation's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and are rising faster than in any other sector. The vast majority of transportation systems are powered by internal combustion engines fueled by gasoline or diesel. Every one hundred gallons of diesel fuel consumed by an engine, emits approximately one metric ton of carbon dioxide emissions. Greenhouse gas emission reduction opportunities in the freight transportation sector can be found by using more efficient intermodal methods such as railroads, waterways, and pipelines. On average, rail transportation is 3x more fuel efficient (per ton-mile basis) than truck transportation.
Truck Idle Reduction
Many vehicle operators must idle their vehicles for long periods of time to provide heating or cooling to the vehicle interior. These may include transportation trucks, school buses, city buses, municipal vehicles, off-road equipment or other equipment. RCE has been involved with several companies that reduced idle time significantly through the deployment of advanced technologies and behavioral changes while meeting the operator’s comfort needs. Idle reduction programs result in reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as other mobile source emissions such as NOx, VOCs, and PM2.5.
